When people first try meditation, they often think they’re doing it wrong.
You sit down… and your mind doesn’t stop.
Thoughts come in, one after the other. You get distracted. You feel restless.
And at some point, you wonder:
“Is this even working?”
The truth is — this is exactly how it’s supposed to feel at the beginning.
1. Start small (and make it easy to succeed)
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to do too much too soon.
You don’t need 20 minutes. You don’t need the perfect routine.
Start with just 2–5 minutes.
The goal at the beginning isn’t to go deep — it’s to build consistency.
When it feels easy, you’ll keep coming back.
2. Sit in a way that feels comfortable
You don’t need a special cushion or a perfect posture.
You can sit on a chair, on your bed, or on the floor.
What matters is that your body feels supported — not tense.
Meditation isn’t about forcing stillness.
It’s about allowing yourself to be still.
3. Bring your attention to your breath
Once you’re settled, gently bring your attention to your breath.
Notice the inhale…
and the exhale.
You don’t need to control it.
Just observe it.
This becomes your anchor — something you can come back to.
4. Your mind WILL wander (this is part of it)
This is the part that surprises most people.
Your mind will wander.
A lot.
You’ll think about your day, conversations, things you need to do.
This doesn’t mean you’re failing.
This is the practice.
5. Gently bring your attention back
Each time you notice your mind has wandered, simply bring it back to your breath.
No frustration.
No judgement.
Just returning.
This moment — coming back — is where meditation is happening.
6. Be kind to yourself as you practice
Many people are harder on themselves during meditation than anywhere else.
But this isn’t about getting it right.
It’s about learning how to sit with yourself, just as you are.
Over time, this creates a sense of calm, steadiness, and understanding.
7. What starts to change over time
As you keep practising, something subtle begins to shift.
You start to notice your thoughts instead of immediately reacting to them.
You begin to see patterns — the same worries, the same habits of thinking.
And in that awareness, you create space.
Space to choose.
Space to respond differently.
This is where meditation becomes more than a habit —
It becomes a way of understanding yourself.
You don’t need to be good at meditation to begin.
You just need to start.
A few minutes a day is enough.
