Most people think meditation is about stopping thoughts.
Sitting still. Clearing the mind. Doing it “properly.”
But when they try… their mind gets even busier.
Thoughts come in, one after the other.
You get distracted. You feel restless.
And at some point, you wonder:
“Is this even working?”
The truth is — meditation isn’t what most people think it is.
🧠 What Meditation Actually Is
Meditation is not about stopping your thoughts.
It’s about learning how to bring your attention back to the present moment.
Because when your mind is constantly in the past or the future, it creates stress, worry, and tension.
When you come back to the present — even for a moment — Things begin to feel calmer.
🌿 Why Meditation Helps
When you start practising meditation, something begins to shift.
You become more aware of your thoughts
You react less automatically
You feel calmer and present
You create space between you and your stress
It’s not that your thoughts disappear
— It’s that your relationship with them changes.
🧠 Different Ways to Meditate
Meditation doesn’t look just one way.
You don’t have to sit still in silence for it to “count”.
In my training and experience, there are different approaches — and each one offers a different way to work with your mind and attention.
🌿 1. Breath-Based Practices
These include breathing techniques and mindfulness of breath. You bring your attention to your inhale and exhale, using the breath as an anchor to feel calmer and more present.
💫 2. Mantra & Sound-Based Practices
This includes mantra and chanting. Repeating a word, phrase, or sound can help focus the mind and create a steady rhythm of attention.
🚶♀️ 3. Movement & Walking Meditation
Meditation doesn’t have to be still. Walking meditation or gentle movement allows you to bring awareness into your body as you move.
🧘♀️ 4. Body Awareness & Mindfulness
This includes body scan and mindfulness practices.
You bring attention to different parts of your body and your current experience, helping you reconnect with how you feel.
💭 5. Contemplation & Visualisation
These practices gently guide your attention. You might reflect on a question, or visualise something calming and supportive.
❤️ 6. Emotional & Heart-Based Practices
This includes loving-kindness, gratitude, and compassion.
These meditations help you soften your mind and build a more supportive relationship with yourself and others.
😮💨 7. Silence & Traditional Practices
This includes silent meditation, as well as approaches influenced by Zen and Buddhist traditions. These focus on awareness, stillness, and observing the mind without trying to change it.
✨ What Matters Most
You don’t need to try everything.
Meditation isn’t about choosing the “perfect” technique.
It’s about finding a way to pause, observe, and begin understanding your mind. That’s where the real change begins.
🧠 What Starts to Change Over Time
As you continue practising, something deeper begins to shift.
You start to notice patterns.
The same thoughts.
The same reactions.
The same habits of mind.
And instead of being carried by them,
You begin to see them.
You create space.
Space to pause.
Space to respond differently.
Space to feel calmer.
Meditation doesn’t need to be perfect.
You don’t need to get it right.
You just need to begin.
A few minutes a day is enough.
